TRANSCULTURAL EXCHANGE TV – TCE TV
SEASON 3
Not all of us may be able to travel. We can, though, see a movie, go to an exhibit or read a book. Art can inspire and help us to understand the wonders of our planet and those who share it with us. To help make that possible, TransCultural Exchange exists. In the more than three decades of our existence, we have produced hundreds of global art projects, artist exchanges, web resources and a biennal International Conference on Opportunities in the Arts. And, now. . .
A NEW SEASON of TCE TV.
Join TCE TV’s Season’s 3 host Janelle Giuliani as she talks to directors of residencies and other programs that support artists’ work, offering tips for artists and firsthand insights into how artists are addressing the pressing times in which we live.
SEASON 3, EPISODE 7, Tips for Residency Applications and Arctic Residencies
Previously, TCE TV host Janelle Giuliani talked to Dan Blask and Summer Confuorto of the Massachusetts Cultural Council about grants – how to find them and how to craft a strong application. Tonight, she’ll talk about another opportunity for artists – residency programs. How to find these, what to consider in choosing one and what residency directors are looking for in their selection of artists for their programs. To help sort this out, Janelle speaks to a frequent juror of such applications, the director of the Italian based artist-in-residency, the C.R.E.T.A. Rome International Residency Program, Lori-Ann Touchette. But first up, Janelle meets with Maaretta Jaukkuri, the director of the Maaretta Jaukkuri Foundation to talk about the Foundation’s fellowship program, affording artists time away for contemplation inside the Arctic Circle.
Episode 7’s Featured Programs in Order of Appearance: Maaretta Jaukkuri Foundation, C.R.E.T.A. Rome International Residency Program, On-the-Move, TransArtis, TransCultural Exchange Resources. SEASON 3, EPISODE 5, Solidarity and Resistance in a Globalized World
:: Special Deluxe Director’s Cut ::
Episode 5 of Season 3 addresses the rise of nationalism around the globe and looks at ways the art community can work in solidarity to resist this trend. To discuss this issue, TCE TV’s host Janelle Giuliani talks with the 2023 co-winner of the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture, Kassem Istanbouli (filmed during TransCultural Exchange’s 2025 International Conference on Opportunities in the Arts: Avenues for Daring). In his presentation, Kaseem describes his and his organization’s efforts to rebuild Lebanon’s destroyed cinemas to offer a welcoming place for people to come together, learn from different perspectives and provide artistic opportunities. Next, Janelle speaks to TransCultural Exchange’s director Mary Sherman. Mary founded TransCultural Exchange over thirty years ago with the aim of fostering a greater understanding of world cultures through large-scale global art projects, cultural exchanges and educational programming. Afterward Janelle talks with the Cité international des artes’ executive director Bénédicte Alliot about how the Cité is continuing to build on its legacy of over sixty years of welcoming artists to its residency programs. And, as an added bonus, this special Deluxe Director’s Cut of Episode 5 includes additional footage featuring the independent curator Johan Pousette addressing the notion of solidarity and how it has evolved from its memorable first appearance as a rallying cry in the ‘80s to its use as a counterbalance in the rise of nationalism and divisions among people today.

SEASON 3, EPISODE 4, Grant Writing Tips for Artists
Making art, like many fields of exploration, rarely goes hand in hand with a steady paycheck. Instead, applying for grants is as much a reality for artists as it is for scientists. But applying for grants is often the last thing artists want to do. However, as grants experts from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Dan Blass and Summer Conforto explain in this episode of TCE TV, artists should embrace the process. Applying for grants can not only lead to financially sustainability, but it can also provide artists with greater exposure and – an often-overlooked component – greater clarity about one’s process and ideas to propel their work forward. Tonight, TCE TV host Janelle Giuliani speaks to Dan and Summer about various types of grants for artists, where to find them and how to put together a strong application. Filmed during TransCultural Exchange’s 2025 International Conference on Opportunities in the Arts, Dan and Summer’s presentations help demystify the grant writing process and the difficult task of deciding what works to include as work samples.
Episode 4’s Featured Programs in Order of Appearance: Alabama Power Foundation, ArtDeadline.Com, ArtSake, The Boston Foundation, Boston Public Library’s Online Resources, Candid, The Foundation Directory, Massachusetts Cultural Council, New England Foundation for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, NYFA Classifieds Listings, TransArtists and TransCultural Exchange’s Resources.
SEASON 3, EPISODE 3, Strategies for Global Exchange, Part 2

Along with hearing from Flux Factory’s Director (formerly, CEC ArtsLink’s Art Prospect Program Director) Susan Katz who helped many artists, curators and critics working in post-Soviet countries, the show features a talk by the Armenia critic and curator Eva Khachatryan and the independent curator and co-founder of Post-Soviet Collective, Yulia Fisch. But first up is a moving presentation by the Ugandan writer and playwright Achiro P. Olwoch, speaking about her work and life under Uganda’s authoritarian regime, followed by her working now in the United States (filmed during her presentation at TransCultural Exchange’s 2025 International Conference on Opportunities in the Arts).

SEASON 3, EPISODE 2, Strategies for Global Exchange, Part 1
In episode 2, TCE TV host Janelle Giuliani and her guests consider ways to support cultural exchange in times of political, economic and social strife. And who better to ask about this than those who have been dealing with this situation for decades. Joining the show tonight is the Flux Factory’s Director, former Director of the nonprofit, CEC ArtsLink’s Art Prospect Program, Susan Katz. While director of CEC ArtsLink’s Art Prospect Program, Susan worked with many artists, curators and critics from former post-Soviet countries. Art can inspire and help us understand the wonders of our planet and those who share it with us. Kicking off the show, Janelle speaks with the executive director of the Cité des international arts in Paris, the biggest residency in the world, followed by talks with representatives from Spain’s #Ey!Studio, Bolivia’s Kiosko Galería, Japan’s NPO Gallery, Italy’s C.R.E.T.A.
