TransCultural Exchange’s founder and director Mary Sherman is a frequent guest speaker at colleges, universities, galleries and artist-run associations. Drawing on her more than 20 years experience as an artist with an active career, a critic for numerous publications (including ARTnews, The Boston Globe, Hyperallergic and Chicago Sun-Times); a curator of projects around the world, a juror for art exhibitions and grants (including the National Endowment for the Arts), she can speak from a number of perspectives to your group’s interests. Her most popular talk is on how to survive as an artist, including how write a press release, launch an international career and find funding and exhibition opportunities within the US and abroad. Mary Sherman also is available to speak to non-profit and cultural organizations about the arts as tools for economic development. Using TransCultural Exchange as a case study, she can cite the organization’s extensive data, supporting the importance of cultural exchange in improving artists’ livelihoods, building stronger and more vibrant communities, creating sustainable business models for artists and promoting intercultural respect and understanding. For over twenty years, she has led a successful non-profit that has garnered awards and accolades from such organizations as the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Asian Cultural Council, Mondriaan Foundation, Netherland-American Foundation and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. In her capacity as TransCultural Exchange’s Director, she has produced over 350+ exhibitions and four biennale Conferences on International Opportunities in the Arts. She has spoken about the organization and its success at many venues and Conferences including the Res Artis’ annual conference in Tokyo in 2012, Open Contemporary in Taiwan and the Graduate Student Forum at MIT.
Speaker Biography:
Mary Sherman is an artist, curator and the director of TransCultural Exchange, which she founded in Chicago in 1989. She also teaches at Boston College and, recently, served as the interim Associate Director of MIT’s Program in Art, Culture and Technology. Additionally, for over two decades, she worked as an art critic for such publications as The Chicago Sun-Times, The Boston Globe and ARTnews. She has received numerous grants and awards, including four Fulbright Senior Specialist Grants and been an artist-in-residence at such institutions as MIT and the Taipei Artist Village. Among the shows she’s curated, two received awards from the Northeast Chapter of the International Art Critics Association. Her own works, which push the definition of painting into the realm of space and sound, have been shown at numerous institutions, including Taipei’s Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Beijing’s Central Conservatory, Vienna’s WUK Kunsthalle, Trondheim’s Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Science and Technology, Seoul’s Kwanghoon Gallery and New York’s Trans Hudson Gallery.

Typically, a suggested donation of $150 + travel expenses, payable to TransCultural Exchange, is requested for a talk. Please also note that the Internal Revenue Services recognizes TransCultural Exchange as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
