During the 2003-2004 academic year, high school and grade school
classes created paper tiles (drawings) and sent these works (along
with emails) to other schools throughout the world to encourage
international dialog and cross cultural understanding. Like the "public
art component," upon receiving their counterparts' set of
tiles, each class created a mosaic like installation at their
own institution. Thanks to Smart
Meeting Design, each of the participating
classes also received free virtual space to create their own
web pages for the project. While engaging K-12 classes in different
world-wide sites to take partake in the project, TransCultural
Exchange also set up virtual, international student exchanges
to encourage dialogue and personal contact among the students.
Whenever possible, TransCultural Exchange also invited the artists
participating in The Tile Project, Destination: The World to
meet with the students.
