For Here, There and Everywhere, TransCultural Exchange asked artists to collaborate with people from different cultures and disciplines. Artists were asked to step outside their historically solitary studio practice and explore new ways of making art – to celebrate cross- fertilization, multi-disciplinary practices and ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking, and in the process to embrace the art of the future.

In some cases the artists collaborated on the same pieces, either trading them back and forth or passing them from one to another in a modern day version of the Surrealists’ game “The Exquisite Corpse,” updated with the use of the internet. Not surprisingly new technology appeared in a number of works, including one in which the commonplace question asked of strangers about the weather became the basis of a global blog and another in which eBay became the artists’ exhibition venue. Artists also joined scientists in experiments that included communicating with bacteria. Isolated cultures were visited and engaged. Musicians composed with visual artists. Chefs worked with sculptors; and others reached out to community members to create wondrous artistic hybrids. All of these pieces remind us that working together is often more enlightening than working alone, that we have much to learn from one another and that much can be gained by doing so.

The result will be over sixty exhibitions, talks and performances in more than as many places, engaging everyone from artists, writers, musicians, chefs, scientists and engineers to a community of rural nomads. More than 200 people from over 60 countries around the world are participating.
