Devotion—Mother and Child
Patrick Fenech • Malta
Chris Tribble • United Kingdom

Taking and collecting images of maternal devotion—including reprinting glass plate negatives from older collections— the artists will create “a woven tapestry” of photographic images. These will focus on the idea of the Madonna and Child, a cherished theme, deeply rooted in Malta’s Catholic society. The approximately eighty resulting images will depict mothers in Malta and London, reflecting the artists’ respective homes and Malta’s former ties to British rule. The mothers portrayed will be broad and diverse, including mothers in managerial positions, mothers who opt to remain home, young mothers and refugees. The artists write that they intend, “to make the public aware of the importance of the bond between a mother and her child…[and how that bond is crucial to] foster a solid family platform that, in turn, contributes towards a stable and healthy community.”

The venue originally formed part of the inner fortifications of the capital city, Valletta, constructed by the Order of the Knights of St. John in the late 1500s. Recently transformed into Malta’s largest center for the arts, the complex also houses a theatre, cinema, conference room, music rooms, workshops and restaurants.
